4 out of 5 stars.
Adult Stuff-
After 10-With the exception of some birds behaving oddly really there is nothing to suggest this movie will be scary or exciting.
After 40-I think if anyone can be called the master of suspense and the slow tell it might be Alfred Hitchcock.
By The End-If this isn't one of the scariest movies, and if you don't consider Alfred Hitchcock a master of terror, then you were not paying attention.
After Checking IMDB- Of course directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Daphne Du Maurier wrote the story and Evan hunter has the screenplay credit. After checking through the cast I came across something entertaining, Veronica Cartwright played the daughter in this movie, but she went on to be in many other shows, (over 100) including "Alien"; a personal favourite of mine!
All the nostalgia aside let us imagine this movie at the time. a 2.5 million dollar budget. That is a decent amount for any film today, let alone one from over 50 years ago. A story with no explanation, a fantastic "what if" and glimpse into a weekend in one small town. Without knowing how or why it leaves one's mind free to theorize and fear the "what if it happens again?"
After reading the FAQ on IMDB I enjoyed some of the questions and some of the info about the alternate endings.
The 4 star rating is my rating as if I saw this movie in the year it was released. My only complaint is that it is a long movie and there are parts where we seem to spend a lot of time getting to know the mother character. I can understand why a person would skip this flick for a newer, faster paced movie with better effects and bigger stars. If you take away the effects, star power, and cut to the chase attitude of a lot of today's films, and just compare stories, you might find new life in these classic gems.
Until next time everybody, remember, Protect Your Privates!
